Turning 22 | 22 Things I Have Learnt

I turned 22 yesterday! *Starts singing Taylor Swift at the top of my voice*. So I thought it would be a good idea to write about 22 things I have learnt over the years, trying to be wise and…..well, I can try right?

  1. Say yes to more opportunities – Allowing yourself to take part in new hobbies, travelling and meeting new people is never a bad thing.
  2. Make sure to spend precious time with the people you love – Life really is too short.
  3. Live life to the full – Again, life is short, you do not know what tomorrow brings. After a difficult time, my outlook on life has definitely changed for the better.
  4. Do not see things as ‘regrets’, see them as lessons you have learnt from – We all make mistakes, we all wish we did not do something, but they happened, so stop wishing they did not and move on, learn from them.
  5. It is ok to be different – Not every human is the same! So what if you have a weird laugh, so what if you have a strange personality or wont shut up. These traits make you ‘YOU’, so embrace them.
  6. Dream big – Make the life that you want. Follow your own dreams, if you listen to what your friends and family think, then you will most likely not be very happy.
  7. Do not listen to what people say about your future plans – Want to do a certain degree? Then go for it. Want to make a blog? Then go ahead, who cares what people think. If it makes you happy, then why stop?
  8. Travelling is the best life experience and education  Ever since going to America for 3 months, I have found how much travelling can help you. You learn so many new things, meet new people, grow in confidence, realise how beautiful the world is, and you just grow as a person.
  9. Losing friends is normal, do not stress – Over our teenage years we make and lose a number of friends. This is normal, the ones who actually matter make the time and effort.
  10. Things sometimes happen for a reason, just go with the flow, it will work itself out – I am a big believer in this! Looking back on the past few years in particular, the ‘bad’ things that happened have helped me in so many ways; they helped me to grow, love life, and realise what I actually want to do with my life.
  11. Work hard and never give up – You do not get anywhere without hard work. So keep going!
  12. Smiling and laughing can be the best medicine – Whenever you are down, a smile and a laugh can help a lot. Smile at someone walking down the street, you could end up making their day. Laugh until you cry, life is short to not have fun.
  13. ‘Please’ and ‘thank you’ – Simple, but powerful. It never hurts to say them.
  14. Do not worry if you do not know what you want to do with your life  Everyone is the same position, I was in that position, even when I was in university! Do not worry!
  15. Everyone looks different, so who cares what that person thinks of you and how you look, if you are happy then who cares – Worrying about what others think is never good! If you are happy, then why change.
  16. Sing like you are Beyonce, who cares if anyone thinks different – Sing everyday! If you miss that high note, then so what! As long as you are having fun right?
  17. Never give up on something – Life can be tough sometimes, but keep going, you will get there very soon.
  18. If you want to eat that chocolate, then eat it – Whether you are on a diet or not, everyone needs a cheat day every once in a while. Enjoy it!
  19. Have a skincare routine – We are not like snakes, we cannot shed our skin unfortunately. Look after it.
  20. Never change to impress someone else – You will end up being unhappy because of it. Someone should like or love you for being you, not for you trying to be a better version!
  21. Instagram likes do not determine your popularity – We live in a world where selfies are everywhere, likes show how popular you are, and filters on snapchat make us more ‘happy’. Why is this the case though? Who cares how many likes you get. Likes do not determine our popularity, they do not determine how pretty you are! Stop listening to the bad things, and post that selfie if you want to. Whether you get 1 like, or 100 likes, you are worth it, you are pretty! Admire your confidence for uploading it in the first place!
  22. Just be yourself, be happy – Enjoy life! Yes, it can be an emotional, stressful, hard and a crazy thing, but it can also be very special and fun! Do what makes you happy and love the life you have!

  1. I love this post, especially points 7 and 14. I’m currently studying at university and am stuck for career choices at the moment. I’m only young though and am excited for the future. This is a great post idea and its great that you have this experience x

  2. Happy belated birthday!! These are all such wise words, but my favorite might just be ‘eat the chocolate!’ I have some in my desk and I’ve been thinking about it all morning…

  3. Ah I agree with most of this πŸ™‚ hard work and travel really are good for you mentally and for your future of course πŸ™‚ Plus 100% with enjoy life, we should just try and enjoy and be happy with our lives as we will gain nothing doing the opposite πŸ™‚ xx

  4. Always good to have a reminder of these things, especially point number 4, sometimes things go wrong but it’s not the end of the world! I have too high expectations of myself so I need to be reminded occasionally. Also, number 19, I’ve just turned 22 myself and I still need to find a skincare routine that works for me, I’m working on it I promise!

  5. I feel like I kinda needed this. I’m turning 20 this weekend and everything is kinda weird in me out and I feel like I’m not doing enough but also doing too much at the same time. Great post!

  6. Happy Belated Birthday! I am turning 22 in September of this year and I cannot believe it! It is crazy how time flies! I will definitely have to do a post like this because I have learned so much over the years! Great post loveβ™₯

  7. Ahhh! I love this post, I turn 20 next week – I agree with so many of these points. We’re only just getting started:) x

  8. Number 8 for sure makes me so excited, I am so ready to travel and make new friends! I can’t wait!
And number 19 is somthing I need to work on, I am getting there with my skincare routine but I need to improve!!
Hope you had a good birthday xox

    1. Yes! I am so excited for you, it is honestly the best thing I have ever done. You will have the most amazing time!
Haha yes, I’m still not 100% there with it, but I’m getting there.
      Thank you Emma xx

  9. These are all so important. Especially not changing to impress people, I feel like we’ve all been guilty of doing that (I have at least!). But, in the long run you’ll never reaaaally be that person, and you won’t be happy with yourself which is the most important thing.

    1. Good for you! Follow your dreams, it is never too late! I would always regret the university course I was on, I never really knew what I wanted to do until last year, I was halfway through the course at this stage and just decided I should finish it! So that is what I’m doing, graduating in July and then continuing to follow my actual dreams. Sometimes we need these things to happen to help us realise what we actually want x

  10. I hope you had a lovely Birthday!! I agree so much with point 7, so many people these days want to give opinions on what you’re doing with your own life but really you just need to ignore it, if it’s not helpful x

    1. Thank you so much! We really do need to ignore them, it is our life at the end of the day. As long as we are happy, then who cares what other people think. It took me a while to not care, and sometimes I still feel myself thinking about what others are saying, but it wont make me happy. So bring it on, lets do what we actually want to do x

    1. Thank you! They are everything, manners can go a long way! It took me a while, and I sometimes still do think what others are saying (they most probably are not even saying anything), but I am getting there, and feeling much happier because of it!
